Tello Drone & iOS Wifi Connection Issues

If you have a Tello drone - actually this is probably the case for any device that you need to connect to via wifi in order to configure/control from iOS / iPadOS - if you have issues with the app just not detecting the drone even if you're connected to the device's wifi connection, try the following: 1) In the Settings app, scroll down to the particular app settings and check that it has local lan access. 2) Forget your home wifi network so that iOS/iPadOS stops trying to connect to it when i…

Debian is King / Ubuntu Ushmuntu

I've always been a fan of Ubuntu Server for my various services. I've been using it for years, and never really considered anything else, as I'm used to the Debian-like ecosystem. I ran a lot of virtual machines, all using a base Ubuntu image that I had customized. I ended up playing with a service that required installation on top of Debian 10. The installation surprised me, as it was fairly quick, and the VM booted almost instantly. Then Debian 11 dropped, and I decided to convert one of my h…

XenServer / XCP-NG VM AutoStart

Newer versions of XenServer expect you to use vApps to handle virtual machines auto starting. ┬áThis may not be appropriate in some situations. You can still enable auto-power on via command line on the host [https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX133910], however this just batch starts all VMs at once. You might like a bit more control, particularly if you require the VMs to start up in a particular order. The method I'm about to explain may not be particularly elegant, but it works for my hom…

Restart != Shutdown

It would appear that according to Windows 10, shutdown is no longer a similar concept to restart. I just installed some drivers for a new device. I get a Windows popup telling me I need to restart to complete configuring the device. If I try access the device control software, it tells me that I need to restart first. Since it's about time for me to go to bed, I figure I'll shut down Windows and test out the device in the morning. I boot up the computer this morning, fresh start, and the fir…

Change of iTune

I always maintained that I would never own an iPhone. Android all the way. I even tested the waters with a Windows phone, but that hit the trash heap after a while - the closed environment reinforced my belief that Android was the way to go, and the lack of app support was the death knell for the platform. I'm happy to say that Windows Mobile is officially dead. Then I moved to Australia. A First World country. My old Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini was getting a bit long in the tooth, going in to its 3…

In the beginning...

...there was blog. And it was good. Actually it wasn't. It was terrible, and it's still terrible, but it's mine. I've spent the past few days importing and converting all my old legacy posts for this new blog platform, ghost. It has been time consuming, but then I'm no stranger to mind numbing work. I wish I could go back in time and tell the angst-ridden me that wrote all those old posts that things do get better. I never thought that we would be living in Australia (these past 9 months now)…
