The Chicken and The Egg

I’ve spent a long time recently going through a client’s Group Policy Object infrastructure. A large part of the GPOs are invalid – either completely broken, referencing missing items, empty, unlinked, and referencing invalid scripts (like VBScript inside a batch file – it’s own WTF). I’ve documented the GPOs as best as I can with the intention of fixing the infrastructure. Marking which GPOs are to be deleted, which need to be renamed to our standards, and those that need to be either consolida…

Busy bee

So there I was, loafing at home for the month of January, when I receive a call from EDS. They wanted to know if I would go work for them, but back at Mercantile – the place I had left last September. Tough call really. I was seriously in two minds about it, but I decided to do it after all. So I’m back, but not quite my old job, thankfully. Still mostly the same people, with a couple of new (EDS) faces. I started last Wednesday, so I’ve basically been there a week. Only a few more months to g…

Time passes way too quickly

Here endeth my third week of the new job. I still haven’t decided if it’s the right thing for me. I’ll give it a few months. My wife is now 6 weeks pregnant with our third child. Dang. I’ve driven over 1500 kilometers in the past three weeks. Crezzy man, crezzy. For the past 7 years I’ve driven around 72k’s a day (to and from work), but now it’s easily twice that. Fortunately I’m a very relaxed driver, so I don’t (or should I say “try not to”) let the traffic and bad drivers get to me. The tax…

Week's Done!

I’ve just completed my first week of my new job. Dang, but I’m really not used to the pace. I’ve been a desk jockey for the past 7 years and now I’m running around to clients at a rate of knots. Fortunately I’m a very patient driver, so the traffic isn’t worrying me too much yet. It took me 2 hours to get home from the office this afternoon. Ugh. Traffic on the highway was absolutely frikkin’ disgusting.…

Things are looking up...

In some of my previous posts, I had been bitching about my job and my work environment. There is now light at the end of the tunnel… here’s hoping it’s not a train. I resigned last Friday, to my boss’s utter horror. She seemed genuinely flabbergasted, and spluttered and asked me what it would take to make me stay, etc. Why is it that they wait until you resign before they ask you that? Anyway, to make a not so long story even shorter, my oldest brother told me his (new) company were looking f…

Between Then and Now

Looking back at my last post, not much has changed. The guy is still pissing me off, though I’ve had a chat with him and let him know exactly how badly he had pissed me off. I think we’re seeing somewhat eye to eye now anyway. I’ll leave things alone for now and see how it goes with him. If he doesn’t improve, then I’ll take things further. Aside from that, the power sub-station that powers our neighborhood mysteriously blew up a few weeks ago. We were without power for 6 days. That really suck…

Annoyances

Our department at work is getting ever smaller. There are now exactly 2 permanent staff members left. One of our team resigned awhile back and has been contracting for the past few months, and that’s due to expire at the end of May. Anyway, sometime last year, management hired a Dutch contractor as technical manager for our department. After about 6 months, he learned the error of his ways, and after making some changes to our infrastructure that made our admin lives more difficult, he left. A…

Shock

Considering my negativity about work the past few months, I was quite shocked when we received our bonus and increase letters yesterday. I was quite sure that the increase would be a waste of time as per usual, and after last year’s decent 10k incentive bonus, I was not expecting to get much, if at all this year, especially considering I verbally attacked my completely incompetent boss one day on the phone awhile back (shortly after she started and was trying to assert herself), so my jaw nearl…
